Introduction to Biotechnology Course

Being a research oriented Science, Biotechnology combines an assortment of techniques to living cells in order to produce a specific product of high quality.

It integrates several sciences such as Medicine, Pharmacy, Agriculture, Genetics, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, Virology, Chemistry, Engineering, Animal Husbandry, Ecology, Cell Biology, Soil science, Bio-statistics, Plant Physiology, and Seed Technology.

It is an exciting and challenging career involving the use of living things in the industrial process with lot of unexpected possibilities. Certain important tasks related to biotechnology are the production of bio-processed food, the pharmaceuticals, the tissue culture, the execution of pollution controlled measures, and the developmental studies in waste management.

Biotechnology is also used in developing various medicines, vaccines and diagnostics, increasing productivity, improving energy production and conservation. In the field of animal husbandry, it is the use of biotechnology which has improved animal breeding. Besides, it has improved the quality of seeds, insecticides and fertilizers. In genetic engineering, the biotechnology has created cloned animals by initiating new modes of propagation.

Biotechnology career has excellent prospects mainly in the areas of medicine and agriculture.

Eligibility

The candidate seeking admission in biotechnology must have a background in science. At intermediate level, he/she should have studied any of the subjects such as physics, agriculture, chemistry or biology to join B.Tech. There are also B.Sc biotechnology offered at certain universities where the requirement is the completion of class 12 with subjects such as physics, chemistry, and mathematics. For postgraduation programmes like M.Sc, graduates in all sciences, engineering technology and medicine are eligible. Some of the PG courses available in biotechnology are as follows.

IIT Delhi and Kharagpur offer Integrated M.Tech programme in biotechnology, the admission for which is through IIT-JEE scores after successful completion of 10+2 or equivalent examination, with physics, chemistry and mathematics. Postgraduates of biotechnology are eligible to pursue more advanced courses like Ph.D and post doctoral research in biotechnology.

Apart from these eligibility criteria, the prospective biotechnologist should have scientific aptitude, interest in biological sciences, ability to work accurately, problem solving skills, analyzing and interpreting skills, and flair to work in laboratories.

Biotechnology is a rapid growing field having great scope in future. The biotechnology careers can be found with pharmaceutical companies, food manufacturing and processsing industries, public funded laboratories, chemical, agriculture, environment control, waste management, energy, and allied industries. Biotechnologists can be employed in the areas of planning, production and management of bio-processing industries.
