About Indian Institute of Science (IISc)
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) started in 1909 by J.N. Tata is a leading institution of research and advanced instruction. Being an institute of higher learning and constantly in pursuit of excellence, it is one of the oldest education centers of its kind in India with a high reputation in the academic world. In 1956, the Institute came under the purview of University Grants Commission as a deemed university.
The Institute has contributed to a great extent in the areas of research and development in the frontier areas science and engineering technologies. It is the first Institute in the country to introduce innovative Integrated Ph. D. Programmes in Biological, Chemical and Physical Sciences for science graduates.
It also confers the Honorary Fellowship on eminent scholars and scientists and on those who have made noteworthy and lasting contributions to the cause of science and industry in India. Apart from formal education, there are also short term programmes for engineers and scientists offered by the Institute.
