The Veterinary Council of India (VCI) established in 1989 by the Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India as a statutory body under Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984 (52 of 1984), regulates the  Veterinary practice and Veterinary education across the country.

It has 27 members taking care of various committees such as the Executive Committee, the Finance Committee, the Regulation Committee, the Education Committee, the Registration Committee, the Examination Committee, the Disciplinary Committee, and the Liaison Committee. Under the scheme Professional Efficiency Development, the council gets financial assistance by Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, Ministry of Agriculture, Government of India.

The Veterinary Council of India (VCI) undertakes the following activities.

  • Maintenance of Minimum Standard of Veterinary Education
  • Recognition of Veterinary Qualification
  • Holding of All India Common Entrance Examination (AICEE)
  • Extension of Indian Veterinary Council Act
  • Constitution of State Veterinary Council as per the Provisions of Section 32 of the Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984
  • Constitution of Disciplinary Committee as per the Provision of Indian Veterinary Council Act, 1984
  • Holding of Orientation Training Programme
  • Preparation of Electoral Roll
  • Holding of Seminar / Conference / Workshop / Zonal Meeting etc
